To All Egyptians

To all you Egyptians who are so proud of your country, you who will not accept the slightest slight against that nation of yours, let me tell you what I think.

You once had a mighty civilisation, the kingdom of the Pharaohs. They gave you the Pyramids, they gave you glorious monuments, they gave you most of your history. So you can be proud of Egypt on that measure.

But can you be proud of Egypt as it is now? Only on the basis that it is a Muslim country. The economy is based on agriculture and tourism. Unlike agriculture, tourism does have high value added, but it seems the revenue is restricted to a few lucky Egyptians. So the standard of living in Egypt is quite low. You do have an abundance of labour, but it is doubtful whether you have an abundance of skilled labour. And those workers who are skilled usually do not find adequate opportunities in Egypt, so the country faces a drainage of skills.

I am told by reliable sources ( people of Egyptian extraction ) that your capital city, Cairo, suffers from overcrowding, and from under-provision of public goods and services.

And I know for a very certain fact that Egypt has no competence in any field of sport compared to most other countries.

Yet I admire my Egyptian friends' defiance in the face of facts, and their refusal to accept that their nation can be anything but a great and modern civilisation.

its called being ''Stubborn''.

  6. An egyptian - u know who...16 November 2009 at 06:02

k, isa.. first and foremost, it is in human nature to love, defend and honour one's country. That is the character of any normal person. You, however, do not fall in that category; you are half british half singapori and u live in ksa. Obviously you have not built up any relationaships with any of the 3 countries. Therefore, you have no idea how the sense of belonging feels. I, rather we, on the other hand, have a very strong and firm sense of belonging to our country, egypt.

And your damn right, we have a mighty civilization to boast about, older than any other that you are anyhow connected to. And they did give us alot to be proud of unlike england, singapore, or ksa. Its surprizing, yet amazing how you got that right!!

Also, let me tell u how the world operates in terms of power: political, economical or any other form. Power is like a wave that all countries ride on; its only a matter of time before whoever is on the top drops down and gets replaced by others from the bottom. The arab world, including egypt, was once on the peak but are unfortunately somewhere lower now. The point is any person, under normal circumstances [not u!!], has unquestionable loyalty to their country regardless of its position on the power wave.

However, now that u've brought it up, let me tell a tiny minority of what makes us proud of egypt in its present day: Egyptian minds are one of the brightest and smartest around the world. We supply full forces of intelligence to countries all around the world especially ones that are open to such contributions like usa, canda and some in europe. In addition, no matter how bad we drop, we still maintain a minimum of political strength that deserves respect around the world. For instance, 5 years ago, the general secretary of the united nations was egyptian, botrus botrus ghali. Currently the head of the world necluear power agency is egyptian, mohd el barad3i. Morever, we are the only arabs who have every won noble prize. 4 of them: anwar el sadat for peace, ahmed zowail for science, nageeb mahfouz for litertature, and a fourth one also for peace. Egyptian people have the wonderful character of hardwork; whichever the field of work or the proffesion they are hard workers. Also, egyptians are very friendly people and form very social societies which would enjoy to be a part of. Last but not least, an egyptian, or egypt in general has a very special air about. You'd know any egyptian not from his face or accent, but from his sense of humour, from his dedication, form his willigness to always be among the elite in his batch.

  7. .... Countinuation16 November 2009 at 06:03

Tell me, what would u, a 11 grader, possibly know about the entire egyptian workforce. Kid, we have tons of very productive youth whether in labour skills like electricians, plumbers, carpernters. Or on a higher level, like engineers or doctors ( hassan fathi, a pole of architecture around the world - magdi ya3qoob, one of the best heart sergouns around the globe). Or even on the level of technology and computer literacy, egytian youth are very advanced.

And seriously, u argue about a nation by how crowded its capital is. Retard! Go look at london first. Didnt you notice how crowded and full of pollution it was?? or did ur singapori or saudi side take over in that prospective blinding your sight of london.

In ANY field of sports we got no competence, you say, you idiot. we completely dominate world squash[amr shabana first place, karim darweesh second place, rami ashour fourth place.. and for women, a phenonemal girl of 13 wins the under 19 world championship, plus for adult women omneya abd el qawi is among the first 10 places]. Also, in volleyball, we've been qualified for the world competition, which joins the best six teams in the world for 5 consective times now. In addition, in handball, we were runner up in youth world cup last time, and we reached the quarter final in the last adult world cup. And just to wake you up, we are very competitive in soccer. Compare us to the world best teams, italy and brazil in the confederations cup and see for yourself. In fact, we maintian the 20-something place in the world ladder. And not to mention long distance swimming, where ahmed khalil hold a few world records. Or to mention roman wrestling in which karam gabr got the world title and a gold medal in the 2004 olympics. To sum up, in lightweight boxing we got 1 silver medals and 2 bronze medals in the olympics. Lastly, in women wieght lifting, there is nahla ramadan which dominates her category in the world championships.

Our nation is in fact a great and modern civilization!! And you should admire our suprise at your unsurpassed idiocy, isa. You see samir, rami and firas at school and and all of a sudden you are throwing wild accusation at egypt out of nowhere, you become all judgemental of an entire nation based of less than 15 indiviuals. Or maybe this is your natural tendency of you arguing for nothing and critisizing wildly taking the better of you yet agian.

I call you "shallow". Now, let me give you this piece of advice, before you talk about an entire nation and question the loyalty of its members, you better dig deeper and know what you have indulged yourself in. And after this article, you really have dropped in my sight and meter of respect, i also regret to say that while you just said you admire something in me, i admire nothing in you!!

  9. Firstly, Zak shut up, you're a spiky-headed racist.

And to Amr Fou'ad and the rest of the Egyptians, I'm sorry you took it as an insult. I just thought I might broaden your views on certain aspects of life, however I did not intend to offend you all, so, sorry.

To Hany, I'm afraid I cannot respond to your response due to the reason I mentioned above. I value Amr's friendship - oh, and yours too - more than I value the intellectual pleasure afforded to me by continuing this debate.

  10. eh, you had an argument with your Egyptian friend, and you bring his whole country and nationality down with him? hah. why all this hatred! yes,- why?

and no im not an Egyptian. but of course anyone would be in defiance of the place where they were born or came from or the place where their ancestors descended from whenever it is being talked of like this.

no i have nothing against you. But i definitely have issues with this post.

  11. you actually get pleasures from elongating debates.??! anyway, looks like u and amr deserve some more "hot comments". if a friendship hangs on the continuation of a debate, than you are both some crystal delicate cuties. :P :D.... anyway, c ya soon (not comin to scool on wednesday)

  12. To anonymous, may I suggest that you make fairly certain that you are in possession of all the facts before you reach a conclusion.

Firstly, you assumed that I had an argument with an Egyptian friend, and as a result insulted his country and nationality. NO, I had an argument with this friend ABOUT Egypt, and this ARTICLE is simply WHAT MY POINT OF VIEW WAS IN THAT ARGUMENT.

So as you can see, there is no hatred either. I think his country is rubbish, he thinks not, so we debate about it, that's all. No hatred of the country or its people.

I know you're not Egyptian, most likely Singaporean or Malaysian. And of course Egyptians would defend Egypt, but they can't deny certain facts, no matter how patriotic they are.

I have nothing against you either, and I hope you will now see my article in a different light.
